BBVA Categories
For those of you who have had this card for awhile, can you explain how to know what specifically is in each category?
For example, I'm moving in the month of June. If I rent a U-haul and pay a storage facility, does that count in their broad category as Travel?
Is there a place to find this information?

Re: BBVA Categories
Hmmm. No place really to find it for sure, BBVA doesn't detail which MCC codes are included in each category. But I have "Health Care" currently as my 2x category and they've included a couple MCC codes for that, including Doctors, Dentists, and Pharmacies/Drug stores.
The USDA has aPDF of all MCC codes. Car rental companies are sandwiched in between airlines & hotels, so they would probably be counted as "travel". But "moving & storage companies" and "trucking local/long distance" are in the ground transportation, and Gas reward categories usually include ground transportation, Discover does.
You might call u-haul and ask them what merchant code they use for credit cards, but my guess is the first dozen people you speak with will have no clue what you're talking about.

Re: BBVA Categories
My storage unit counts as travel on my Venture card.
YMMV.

Re: BBVA Categories
Ok. That's helpful so far. Discover is 5% cb on gas this quarter. Huge bonus if I can squeeze my U-haul into that. 😁👍

Re: BBVA Categories
I would call their rewards department. I recently had an issue and they were super nice about it.

If you are near the U-haul location you might consider stopping by and picking up a moving box or two a few days prior to getting the truck/trailer (the smaller boxes are actually quite nice, and they only run a couple of bucks or so apiece).
While not guaranteed (I don't recall if U-haul runs charges locally or not) it might give you an idea of what coding to expect.

Re: BBVA Categories
@UncleB brilliant! 😁😁
I'll do a cheap purchase to test.
It is still a but frustrating that the categories are all so vague though.

Re: BBVA Categories
Doctor of Credit to the rescue:
What Counts as Gas & Transportation for 5x with Freedom and Discover?
Freedom only earns 5x on local transportation like taxis and subways, not on any long-distance transport like Amtrak or car rentals. Discover, on the other hand, earns 5% on all ground transportation, even things like car rentals.
I'd say Discover is your best bet for U-haul for 5% rewards. U-haul should count as a car rental, it's just a bigger vehicle.
And good luck, moving is right up there with my least favorite thing to do.
EDIT: Using the Visa Supplier Locator U-haul uses MCC code 7513, Ground Transportation. Visa codes are different from Amex & Discover, but usually pretty close. Big differences are stores like Wal-mart which often codes as grocery on Visa/MC but always as discount store on Amex/Disco. And great idea UncleB, buy a couple moving boxes for a test, whether it's a box or truck/trailer the merchant code will be the same.

Re: BBVA Categories
The categories aren’t well defined but they are surprisingly broad. Like Woot Gourmet purchases code under grocery (it used to be Wine.Woot and it’s still billed as such) and Dell Outlet coded as retail through a PayPal purchase which is very rare since Dell Outlet products aren’t brand new but refurbished, open box, or scratch and dent.
I have actually only made one purchase so far that didn’t code as a category, a Steam store video game purchase. Even my VPN recurring charge paid via PayPal showed up as business services.
They also appear to forgive $.99 charges so I got Hulu free this month. 🤷♂️
I second calling and finding out if they’ll tell you the MCCs. If they don’t have it, no harm no foul, but if they do you’ll know what to use.
