The debut album from multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Zacchae'us Paul is an irreverent, fresh take on "America's classical music" that speaks to the 24 year old artist's deep-beyond-his-years understanding of Black music and the African diaspora. Paul stretches and bends jazz sounds around the Atlanta hip-hop he grew up with, the gospel sounds and philosophies that have long shaped his music making, and the Caribbean rhythms he learned studying in Puerto Rico. He has created a wholly personal sound that is youthful, and thoughtful all at once. - Magic Music For Family Folk by Luther Dickinson
The collection of childhood favorites was recorded for fun, at home, with family and friends in the spirit of sharing. Everyone is welcome. Dickinson wanted to share these songs with his kids and his friend's kids as well as expose his daughters to the joy of learning, performing and recording music that his father shared with me. The recording was largely done in 2017 during dinner parties, sleep overs and play dates, either in a family style social setting or while the kids slept. After burning rough mix CDs for the family car, he set the project aside until 2023. Finishing the album with fresh ears album benefitted from his film score work done in 2020 and 21.
Big Thief's debut album is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne met longtime musical partner, guitarist and singer, Buck Meek, in Brooklyn, and they quickly formed a creative bond tempered by the experience of traveling and performing for months on end. Now, as a full rock and roll band, with Buck on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, they bring a steady wildness, giving the songs an even deeper layer of nostalgia.
