IT's A SAD STORY, TWIGGS: 4 Health: I Spastic Paralysis By Dr.
Walter C. Alvarez Medical Consultant, Mayo Clinic 1 have learned most of the medicine I know by listening people have been ill, and occasionally I learn much by reading a book by someone who has been through hell with some illness. There just came to my desk one of these books, a sprightly one called "Three Steps Forward," written by Vera Dean (Faber and Faber, London). It tells about a girl who was born with a bad case of spastic paralysis or cerebral palsy. Many people who are fighting their way back to health, in of this could doubtless find discascom in reading this book, just as Vera Dean found great comfort in reading Christy Brown's classic, "My Left Foot" (Simon and Schuster, New York).
THE BOOK is by an Irish boy who was born badly palsied, and later was tremendously helped by fine doctors. Another book by a palsied man (it may be found in many public' libraries) is Dr. Carlson's, "Born That Way." spite of terribly physical handicaps, and a complete lack of money, he managed to through a university and then through a medical school. Since then he has been running schools for cerebral palsied children. People who need help with this disease should get touch with the United Cerebral Palsy 369 Lexington New York.
They should note also that the National Foundation (800 2d New York 12), which used -to concerned only with poliomyelitis is now interesting self in birth palsies, arthritis. MY ANSWER by, Billy Graham A certain young woman who has been used to bring me to God and faith has continued to be more than interested in me.
I am afraid she is in love with me. The trouble is, while I deeply appreciate her influence in my life, I don't have the feeling of love for her. Should I just be rude and tell her, or shall I avoid her? I don't know what to do. P. D.
You may be surprised to find that the young woman is not as much in love with you as you think, though it is possible. You should think through the matter of your relationship to her, and also discover why you are not attracted to her. It may be that the American concept of romantic love has confused you so that you cannot recognize genuine devotion and respect. If this girl has been able to direct you to the Savior and has had such a wholesome influence upon your life, don't quickly leave her for one who makes your heart beat faster. Too few young people consider the spiritual aspects of love and marriage.
Life is an intensely practical matter, and a devoted and unselfish wife is worth more than a glamour girl. Why don't you make it a matter of prayer, asking the Lord to give you some clear direction. Don't be selfish in your decision, but leave it with the Lord. The Bible says, "In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path." The accompanying story indicated that this relatively mature child had not even one tooth and that it was estimated that two or three should come through in another two or three months, by the time this boy otherwise apparently perfectly normal -reached the ripe old age of 21 months. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) months walks and talks (in his own fashion), seems quite bright in every respect, and your pediatrician assures you that his teeth are on their way, you probably don't worry too much even if he is toothless rather late.
suppose he 18 months olaut and doesn't walk yet, though all his cousins have been running around, upright, ever since a year or so of age. Suppose he is and doesn't talk yet, though appearing fully bright in every other way. Or suppose he's older, say in second grade, and just absolutely cannot read though he does everything else well enough. Then you are going to wor-any parent would- even child psychologist if it's his own child who is conspicuously slow in some important area of behavior. Now we cannot give you a blanket guarantee that none of you have anything to worry about.
And certainly if you are seriously worried about a marked lag of any kind in development in your childspeech that is slow to come in probably causes the greatest worry--you should check with your pediatrician. He may himself be able to answer your questions and calm your fears. Or he may refer you to a child specialist or children's clinic for diagnostic examination. I IF YOU ARE seriously wor- ried, you shouldn't let things go and sit back and hope. However, growth, as in the case of this 18-monther with no teeth, does proceed unevenly in many children.
In children who are potentially normal and who will eventually turn out to be perfectly all right, some one kind of behavior can and often does lag way behind the others. This slowness mav be sexlinked -that is, many boys do seem to talk later than girls, and also seem to develop good elimination habits later than girls. Or it may be a purely individual matter. Whichever it is, if your child's slowness in some certain area is worrying you, and you have already taken the pains to check with your pediatrician and he says not to worry, we suggest that you relax and keep in mind the little boy with no teeth. Chances are that the child you're worrying about at least has teeth! Our prediction is that this toothless little fellow may erupt eight teeth all at once.
